Oh Felicia Day. What can I say? No one can promote like you can. You are so smart. Whatever you do is genius.

Five Reasons to Watch The Guild

The Guild is three episodes into season two on msn.com. The dramatic webisode is a tough nut to crack and I don't think anyone has done it as well as Felicia Day has with The Guild. The series is a perfect little gem in many ways. Here are few of them:

It's Inside the Web World

The Guild gets the web and makes lots of inside jokes that cater to the geekdom. There are hilarious lines like "I lied to my own webcam" and "In the world of management 2.0, you have to be able to trust all your widgets." In Episode 201, there's a great exchange between Codex and Zaboo about T1 lines that almost ignites a romance. There is no one who has their finger more firmly on the pulse of today's web than Felicia Day. And no one who can match her ability to find the humour in it.

It's in the Medium and the Close-Up

The shooting is web-perfect; simple and in close enough to read the emotion on the faces. There's nothing elaborate about the camera work, no dollying or even panning. It's just clean and brightly lit. But the simplicity and nice close shooting helps you connect emotionally with the characters. That connection -- between viewer and character -- is one of the big keys to why this series is so compelling.

Great Characters

The Guild centers on Codex, a neurotic gamer played by Felicia Day. Surrounding her are a cast of five oddballs, each one serviced with a little storyline of his or her own in season one. Vork, Tinkerballa, Zaboo, Clara and Bladezz are totally original, perfectly cast and very very funny. It seems as if Day has hit on just the right number of characters (6). She gives them just enough comedy and story for us to get to know them well over a season of 10 five-minute episodes.

Masterful Shaping of the Episodes

Every episode of The Guild seems to have a nice little shape to it. All start with Codex talking directly to camera and all deliver a joke before we're a minute in. This direct to camera teaser really teases, giving a sense of what's to come, but not quite. The effect is, you have to keep watching. Each episode has a self-contained quality. Even though taken together the episodes tell a long story, individually each has its own beginning, middle and end. But even though, each episode is fun to watch on its own, they each have a great cliffhanger ending that drives you to the next. It's the potato chip effect; you can watch the entire first season one after the other, because after the first, you just can't stop.

Felicia Day

Felicia Day's character Codex is equal part pathetic, neurotic, cute and irresistible.

So it's Friday night and still jobless, yay! Haven't left the house in a week. My therapist broke up with me. Oh yeah. There's a gnome warlock in my living room... sleeping on my couch.

But as wacky as Codex may be, she's the voice of reason and sanity compared to her Guildmates.

Day is clearly a huge talent behind the scenes, writing and producing the series but she's also a brilliant on-screen presence. The material is terrific and her performance is the icing on the cake. I've said it before, Felicia Day is my hero.

If I have any criticism, it is the teeny tiny nit-picky complaint that I can't embed season two here. So, I'm giving you The Guild's Christmas card and this advice: Watch The Guild, all of it from start to Season 2 Episode 3. And then join me on the edge of my seat while we wait for the rest of the season to get posted.

How Can You Not Love Felicia Day?

Felicia Day is all kinds of wonderful. There was that turn in Dr Horrible, but that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to her talent. She also wrote, produced and starred in The Guild which is one of the best web serials around.

Here's a video of her on the Dr Horrible panel at ComicCon caught Twittering instead of paying attention. For those of you who don't know Twitter, this is akin to passing high tech notes in class... Only she was on stage at the time.

A Web Serial Worth Watching

I've been watching (and posting) tons of web serials, but I haven't found too many I really get (Dr Horrible doesn't count as a web serial -- it was a mini-series or a special or something other). The Guild is the exception. I like it a lot. It was written and produced by Felicia Day and when you start watching it, you'll realize how under used she is in Dr. Horrible.

I'm going to go watch a few more episodes. Here's the first to get you started:
